Differing from sinology (classic) and Chinese studies (including humanities and social science) it encouraged an interdisciplinary approach to the study of China
It had the 'City University FREEDMAN Collection' (47 boxes 1940c-1970c). They were personal collection of Maurice Freedman (1920-1975), Professor of Social Anthropology. They have been kept at LSE Library from 1998.
The China Research Unit ran the 'London China Seminar' on a weekly basis during term time for 25 years at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London.
It organized some research projects, e.g. Social support arrangements and transformation of local traditions, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).
