A comparative study between
global civil society and 'global symbiotic society'

CCPN Global is developing a research project entitled 'A comparative study between global civil society and "global symbiotic society"' with the Centre of China-Europa Forum at Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Global Symbiosis Institute, Hong Kong.

About the project

Chinese characters ‘共生’ (gongsheng) can be translated into English as ‘symbiosis’. We noticed that Xi Jinping, the President of China, used the term in many occasions in a slightly different ways in the past few months. For example, ‘Harmonious symbiosis (和谐共生)’ in ‘Xi Jinping: Solve Development Problems, to Improve People’s Livelihood is Still China’s Top Priority’ (Chinanews.com, 3rd Nov 2013); ‘plural symbiosis (多元共生)’ in ‘President Xi Jinping Delivered a Speech in Indonesia Parliament (full text)’ (Chinanews.com, 3rd Oct. 2013). According to a review article entitled ‘Xi Jinping’s Interpretation of the New Security Strategy: Abandon Confrontation and Symbiotic Cooperation’, Xi used the ‘cooperative symbiosis (合作共生)’ for eight times. However, no English translation for the word ‘gongsheng’ (共生) can be found in this context in any media report. After carrying out a large number of literature reviews in Chinese we realized that there might be a change from ‘harmonious society’ (和谐社会) to ‘co-symbiosis society’ (共生社会) in CPC’s next regime for China’s future social development. This requires further investigation.

There are already many studies on global civil society this project will employ a pair of terms global civil society and 'global symbiotic society' for a comparative perspective between China and other countries or regions.
