Compared with 'sinology' (the study of Chinese classical language and literature), ‘Chinese studies’ (humanities and social sciences combined), or ‘China studies’ (as a branch of area studies), the ‘China in comparative perspective’ is an interdisciplinary social science subject with some of the characteristics of area studies and comparative approach.
Over the past few years, ‘China in Comparative Perspective’ has been developing rapidly (see About us). Methodologically we have put forward the innovative idea of 'advanced studies on China'. This was inspired by
The advanced studies on China make use of China as a comparator to compare China with other contries or regions, contemporarily and historically, with other countries or regions in interdisciplinary, multiple engagements, cross-institution, and translational approaches for advancing general knowledge. It also compares Chinese people or their thoughts methodologically and theoretically within the broader context of human knowledge. It engages collaborative studies with academic, government, business and the public on China in its Asian and global contexts.
