IAS in the UK and China

The first Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS), 'one of the world's leading centers for theoretical research and intellectual inquiry', was founded in 1930 and located in Princeton, USA. It has four Schools: Historical Studies, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences.

In 1994 the School of Advanced Studies (SAS), University of London 'brings together the specialised scholarship and resources of ten prestigious postgraduate research institutes to offer academic opportunities across and between a wide range of subject fields in the humanities and social sciences'. Since the celebration of its 75th anniversary the Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS) in 2005 has gained worldwide popularity.

Looking at the mission statements and organisations of the existing IASs in the UK and China I found they are more or less modelled on the Princeton one. It seems that nowadays people might have realized that the comparative and interdisciplinary studies and the opportunity to study freely would be very helpful for gaining a better understanding of human existence and deepening human knowledge.

Professor Kevin Sharpe, Queen Mary College, University of London, when concerned about humanities research in the UK, wrote 'We need a flagship to lead the humanities fleet to fighting fitness': 'The current climate is one in which not establishing an institute for advanced studies in the UK will result in the humanities losing reputation, visibility and the competition for research funding. Without a flagship, the whole fleet may be vulnerable.' (Times Higher Education, 19 June 2008).

More positively, the new series of lunchtime lectures on 'Thinking Like a Social Scientist' started in early 2008 can be seen as LSE's echoing this trend (See 'Thinking Like a Social Scientist'). Moreover, LSE social scientists have already participated in this trend, eg. both Professor Lord Bhikhu Parekh and Professor Nikolas Rose became IAS Advisory Council members (2006-2009), Durham University; Professor Lord Anthony Giddens and Professor Immanuel Wallerstein have been Honorary Directors of ISA-Fudan since it was launched in 2008.

In China in the 1990s there were two Centres for Advanced Study. The first one was founded by  Professor Zou Heng-fu (邹 恒 甫 so-called the Centre for Advanced Study on Economics at Wuhuan University in 1994 and later  in 1999 included philosophy, history and sinology, etc.  In 1997  Professor Chen Ning Yang, the Nobel Laureate in Physics (1957), launched another which stresses the natural sciences at Tsinghua University.   IAS-Fudan, the National Institute for Advanced Study on Social Science at Fudan University, was launched in June 2008. Professor Deng Zhenglai (邓正来) has been appointed as the Director. This fascinating initiative emphasises 'social science' and provides bridges to the Institute for Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences at Nanjing University, and the China Institute for Advanced Study (CIAS). The comprehensive CIAS was launched at Central University of Finance and Economics (CUFE) in April 2008 under the Directorship of Professor Zou Heng-fu (邹 恒 甫).

The 'IAS phenomena' has also received attention from scholars in China, eg. 'Institutes for Advanced Study: A Comparative Analysis of their Models and Missions', by Qian Xiaohong, Zhu Ling, Chen Jin, Tsinghua University Educational Studies, No3, 2007 (钱晓红 , 朱凌 , 陈劲,'高等研究院创建模式比较与任务探究, 《清华大学教育研究》2007年03期). In June 2008 Sun Yat-sen University announced that it would launch its Institute for Advanced Study on Social Science and appointed Professor Wang Jun (王珺) to be the Director.
